Saturday 18th July: Coach outing, to
Bateman’s,
Bateman’s is a beautiful Jacobean
mansion built in 1634, as well as being the family home of the Kipling’s from
1902 to 1939. The interior of the house
reflects the author’s strong association with the East. There are no guided
tours.
The six acre garden comprises both
formal and wild areas and forms a perfect setting for the house. Its varied features include a rose garden, a
pond with exotic fish, an extensive herb border, a pear arch, fine lawns with a
double row of pleached limes and a walled garden with herbaceous and climbing
plants adjacent to the Tea Room. The
River Dudwell runs through the southern part of the property amongst a
profusion of flowering trees and grasses.
