Bateman’s is a beautiful Jacobean mansion built in 1634, as well as being the family home of the Kipling’s from 1902 to 1939.  The interior of the house reflects the author’s strong association with the East. There are no guided tours.

The six acre garden comprises both formal and wild areas and forms a perfect setting for the house.  Its varied features include a rose garden, a pond with exotic fish, an extensive herb border, a pear arch, fine lawns with a double row of pleached limes and a walled garden with herbaceous and climbing plants adjacent to the Tea Room.  The River Dudwell runs through the southern part of the property amongst a profusion of flowering trees and grasses.

Bookings can be made for the above outing by telephoning the treasurer on 730961. The all inclusive cost is £19.50p. National Trust members are admitted free therefore only the coach fare will apply which is £13.40p. The coach will depart Manor Grove at 0815 am, yes, 8.15am, calling at bus stops through the village. Our visit will coincide with a local craft fare being held in the garden at no extra charge. Time permitted, we may be able to squeeze an hour’s visit to Brighton on the way home. Please make payment by 1st July.
